Le Grand départ

Trip in negative

In the presence of Frédéric Thibaut

Martial Raysse, 1972, France
DCP, color, English/French, 71'

Following a series of short films which were praised in experimental cinema circles, protean artist Martial Raysse stays on course for a first feature film, continuing his exploration of visual effects. Incidentally, this “Great Departure” is almost entirely shot on colour negative. The trip could not promise to be more lysergic, considering this hippy saga shows a retreated guru looking for paradise. Superimpositions, fuzzy effects, nods to classical painting, chromatic inversions, to the acid groove thunes of the group Gong.
